Bird watching around Kathmandu

: 4 days   : Inquiry   : Book

Kathmandu is a valley surrounded on all sides by wonderfully green hills covered with dense forests. These forests and hills provide a safe haven for various species of birds. We begin our tour from Kathmandu and heading towards Godavari, we hike up to Phulchoki where a good amount of amazing birds and great views of the surrounding hills await us. At Phulchoki, you can see birds like the Crimson-breasted Woodpecker and the Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-babbler among others. We then head off to the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve where another great number of birds can be seen.

Day: 1 Kathmandu
In Kathmandu, you will be received at the airport and transferred to your hotel. After a briefing by your tour leader and an overview about the whole program he could welcome you to a meal in one of the better restaurants in the city.

Day2: Godavari-Phul Choki
We move to the Godavari Botanical Garden to beginning with bird watching. After some amount of seeing the busy streets of Kathmandu, we can move to Godavari in the afternoon.  In the afternoon we will visit the botanical gardens of Godavari where we will look particularly for Spotted Forktail and various flycatchers.

We will then hike up to the hill of Phulchoki. Birding in the Phulchoki Hill is enjoyable as about 90 species have been recorded in this area. If the weather permits us, we can reach the top and can have the opportunity to see great vistas, from Dhaulagiri Himal to the Everest area. We will descend later birding all along the way. Most of the slopes are covered by Himalayan sub-tropical forest, and we will look for a number of the local species including Rufous-bellied and Crimson-breasted Woodpeckers, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-babbler, Rufous Sibia,  Rufous-winged, Nepal and White-browed Fulvettas, Green-tailed Sunbird, Cutia, Blue-winged Minla, Stripe-throated and Whiskered Yuhinas, Red-flanked Bluetail, White-browed Bush-robin, Dark-throated Thrush, Grey-winged and White-collared Blackbirds, Buff-barred and Black-faced Warblers and a great many others.
We will return back to our hotel in Kathmandu in the evening.

Day3: Shivapuri
In the morning we set off to the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve situated about 12 kms north of Kathmandu. Some of the birds in the area are the Laughing Thrush, Crested Serpent Eagle, little Pied Fly Catchers, Rupy-throats, and Babblers. At Nagarjuna at 2105 meters pheasants, magpies, sunbirds, and ruby throats are found. We will return back to Kathmandu in the evening. Halt overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
