Mount Kailash in western Tibet is a mountain commonly sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpos, those adherents of ancient animistic beliefs. In Sanskrit, it is called “Mt. Meru or Sumeru”, in Hindi, “Kailash or Crystal Shining”. To Tibetans it is Kang Rimpoche or the “Precious Jewel of the Snows”. Mt. Kailash (6714 meters) is the home of the Hindu God Shiva and his consort Devi - Parvati, and of the Tibetan God Demchog and his consort Dorje Phagmo. It rises from the shores of the sacred Manasarovar Lake (4600 m) soaring to 6723 m.
Two lakes, Manasarovar (Mapam Tso, the unconquerable lake) and Rakas Tal lie at the southern foot of Mt. Kailash. Rakas Tal is associated with the forces of darkness whereas Manasarovar is represents the forces of light. Also, the vicinity of Mt. Kailash is the source of four great Rivers (the Indus, The Sutlej, the Brahmaputra and the Karnali) which water the four quarters of the earth.
To circumambulate the mountain, Tibetans, earnest in their beliefs, that a single circuit will cleanse them of the sins of a lifetime and 108 such will ensure the attainment of enlightenment in this life.
The best time of year to visit Mt. Kailash & Lake Manasarovar region is between mid-May and October. Zhang-Mu, Lhasa and Simikot (far western border of Nepal) are 3 different major gateways to Mt. Kailash & Lake Manasarovar.
Every year thousands of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain pilgrims throng Mt. Kailas traversing remotest and toughest regions of the Himalayas in pursuit of spiritual realization. High altitude, rugged terrain and arid climatic condition make the journey a quite arduous. Bureaucracies, at times, also become quite complicated.
