REGION
Everest
– or to give its proper Nepali name, Sagarmatha (“Brow of the Ocean”),
or its even more proper Sherpa name, Chomolungma (“Mother Goddess
of the World”). The highest peak in the world is the greatest attraction
of the region. The Everest region is the main trekking destination
east of Kathmandu. It divides into two distinct areas, the lower,
greener and more populous country to the south known as Solu. The
region wedged between Solu and the Tibetan border is Khumbu comprising
the spectacular, harsh landscape of Everest and the surrounding
peaks and glaciated valleys. The Khumbu region is protected within
Sagarmatha National Park, which is helping to preserve the remaining
forest. The area of the park is 1148 square kilometers. The vegetation
includes pine and hemlock forests at lower altitudes, fir, juniper,
birch and rhododendron woods, scrub and alpine plant communities,
and bare rock and snow. Wild animals most like to be seen in the
park are the Himalayan tahr, goral, serow and musk deer.
The memories you freeze are everlasting in this region, remote monasteries,
irrepressible Sherpas, and peaks with almost human moods and personalities
create an unforgettable experience. The challenge of getting there
is great. The choice is between flying to Lukla at, 2800m on the
doorstep of Khumbu and taking the bus to Jiri in Solu and trekking.
In ideal world, you would walk in from Jiri and fly out of Lukla
to avoid back tracking.

Base Camp Everest the start way 19 Days trip with-KTM
[13 Days adventures trek, 6 Days in KTM]
Making the journey to Everest Base Camp is the fulfillment of a
dream made even better by great time you’ll have trekking through
the home of the Sharpa people along the way.
Your objective is a visit to Everest Base Camp (17,575ft.) or even
more challenging the near by Kalapattar (18,193ft.) with its breathtaking
views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse (the world’s fourth highest mountain)
and numerous other peaks. After a spectacular flight to Lukla (9403ft.),
you trek up the Dudh Koshi (milky river) to Namche Bazzar, the bustling
center of Sherpa life. The highlights of your time here, while you
acclimatize are visits to Sherpa homes and the perk museum before
heading to Thyanboche Monastery the holiest in the Khumbu. It is
serenely on a high meadow in the lee of the distinctive peak of
AmaDablam.
The trail now takes you ever upward skirting formidable glaciers
and neat Sherpa villages. On returning to Lukla bid a fond farewell
to your gracious Sherpa hosts and set of on the return flight along
the mighty Himalaya to Kathmandu. There is time to reflect on your
adventure as well as exploring this historic and exotic city.

The
Solu Jiri walk in: This is most famous Everest approach, as Jiri
is connected by bus to Kathmandu, and innkeepers along the trail
are reasonably used to hosting guests. Moving across the lay of
the land, the trail goes through valleys as low as 1500m and passes
as high as 3500m. Good glimpses of the Gauri Shankar peak give you
the inspiration. You will be engrossed in Solu’s lasting images
of tumbling gorges, rhododendron forests and terraced fields hewn
out of steep hillsides. The route passes through some important
Sherpa villages, notably Bhandar and Junbesi, the latter with an
active monastery. From Jubing the trail finally bends north towards
Everest, following the valley of the Dudh Koshi. The route side
steps Lukla and joins the well trodden route to Khumbu. Side visits
to the cheese factory at Thodung and Thubten Chholing Gompa are
fascinating if you have the time.

Khumbu:
the Everest trek – The trail north from Lukla is the trunk route
of the Everest Trek: everyone walks it at least once, and all but
a few backtrack along it as well. Most trekkers follow it to the
end at Kala Pattar (the classic viewpoint of Everest) and Everest
Base Camp, both about eight days north east of Lukla. You can combine
this with a trip to the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, about the same distance
north of Lukla. The trail from Lukla meanders north along the Dudh
Koshi before bounding up to Namche (3450m), where Khumbu and the
serious scenery start. You can coincide your trip with pan – cultural
Saturday market, or visit the national park visitors’ center, which
contains an informative museum. Beyond Namche, the trail veers northeast
into a tributary valley and climbs to Tengboche, surrounded by juniper
forest and commanding a show stealing view of Ama Dablam. The trail
continues to Pangboche, containing Khumbu’s oldest Gompa, where
the lama will show you some yeti relics. You move on the trail to
Pheriche from here the route bends north again, ascending the moraine
of the Khumbu Glacier to reach Lubuche. Once you pass the last huddle
of tea houses in Gorak Shep and climb the grassy mound of Kala Pathar
all your troubles and pain vanish. Your payoff comes with an unbelievable
panorama not only of Everest but also of its neighbours.

Lakes: About two day walk from Gorak Shep, which lies in the next

above and below Gokyo. The overlook at Gokyo is the high point of
the visit.

This
region is close to Kathmandu and is protected by the Langtang National
Park, with an area of 1710 square kilometers. The area extends from
32 km north of Kathmandu to the Nepal – China (Tibet) border. This
park encloses the catchments of two major river systems: one draining
west into the Trishuli river and the other east of Sun Koshi river.
The complex topography and geography together with the varied climatic
patterns have enabled a wide spectrum of vegetation type to be established.
These include small areas of subtropical forest, temperate oak and
pine forests, with alpine scrub and grasses giving way to bare rocks
and snow. The wildlife is worth a mention as we can find wild dog,
red panda, pika, muntjack, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan
tahr, ghoral, serow, rhesus monkey and common langur. A part of
the park also forms a migratory route for birds from India and Tibet.
This
region is a good choice for those with limited time as it is near
the capital. The views are spectacular and the area is easily accessible.

POPULAR TREKS
Helambu:
Access to Hemlambu is easy from Kathmandu; you can tailor a circuit
to your schedule. The peaks of Langtang on this route are great.
Helambu was once considered a hidden, sacred domain, and its misty
ridges and fertile valleys are still comparatively isolated. Sundarijal
is the most common starting point. The route takes you through the
Shivapuri Watershed. You can make a loop around two main ridges
and the valley of the Melamchi Khola, and stay as high as possible
and taking in the villages of Malemchi Gaun, Tarke Ghyang and Shermathang.
The walk is rewarding passing picturesque monasteries and contouring
through forests of oak, rhododendron and daphne, whose bark is used
to make paper.

Langtang: The Langtang trek can be done in as little as a week.
After a days walk the trek gets really interesting, first following
the continuation of the Dhunche road up the unpromising valley of
the Bhote Koshi before leaving the road moving towards Syabru in
the Langtang Valley. You climb up the gorge like lower valley, where
oaks and rhododendron give way to peaceful hemlock and larch forest;
after ascending an old moraine, snowy peaks suddenly loom ahead
and the gorge opens into a U-shaped glacial valley. The Langtang
village is good place to spend a night, while Kyangjin boasts a
small gompa and a cheese factory. The Langtang Glacier is a full
day’s walk further up the valley. You can move more ahead and reach
Tsergo, from here you can view and awesome white wilderness of peaks.

Gosainkund:
Gosainkund Lake is the site for a great pilgrimage. The large rock
in the center of the lake is said to be the remains of Shiva shrine
and it is also claimed that a channel carries water from the lake
directly to the tank at the Kumbeshwer Temple in Patan. Gosainkund
is the most famous of a string of lakes and renowned among Nepali
Hindus. This can be trekked on its own in as little as four days,
but because of its rapid ascent to high elevation. It is best done
after some acclimatizing in Langtang or Helambu. From either Dhunche
or Syabru, trails ascend steeply through mossy rhodendron forest
to the monastery and cheese factory of Sing Gompa. Above here, the
trail climbs through tall fir stands before emerging above the tree
line for increasingly panoramic views of the high peaks and finally
entering the barren upper reaches of the Trishuli river, where glacial
moraines and rockslides have left a string of half a dozen lakes
(kund). You can also climb a nearby summit for awesome views.

| ANNAPURNA
REGION
This
region is the most popular trekking region of Nepal. Alpine meadows,
bamboo forests, and a variety of trees make a day’s experience remarkable.
Wildlife includes the barking deer, bear, tahr, ghoral, danphe,
musk deer and blue sheep. Most of the treks start or finish close
to Pokhara, and transportation to trail heads is well developed;
with great views just two days up the trail, short treks are particularly
feasible.
The Annapurna Range faces Pokhara like an enormous sofa, 40km across
and numbering nine peaks over 7000m, with Annapurna I above all
at 8091m. The Range and the adjacent hill areas are protected within
the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), for which you have
apply for a trekking permit. ACAP has won high praise for its holistic
approach to tourism management. The main aim of the project is to
protect the area’s natural and cultural heritage, while at the same
time ensuring sustainable economic and social benefit for the people.
The project has set up kerosene depots and installed microhydroelectric
generators to provide alternative fuels.
The trekking in Nepal is of two major types Tea House trekking and
Camp Trekking. The Tea House Trekking - there are a number of Tea
Houses on all trekking routes in Nepal and these places have all
basic necessities and you can enjoy the hospitality of the local
people. The Camp Trekking is trekking with all equipment and camping
with your own tent and cooks and porters traveling to see to your
comfort. This type of trekking is closer to nature.
SOME
POPULAR TREKS IN THE REGION
The Jomsom Trek: This is the recognized classic trek and the most
developed stretch of trail in Nepal. The full trek would take about
10 – 12 days, but the trail network is extensive, so shorter and
longer variations are possible. The route moves through the wettest
part of Nepal to the driest and has a variety of mesmerizing views
of the great Himalayan Range. North of Poon Hill, the trail drops
into the valley of the Kali Gandaki and fun really begins; as you
follow the course of the world’s deepest gorge – the 8000 meter
hulks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna tower on either side. The valley
is famous for its ethnic diversity. The walking is easier after
Poon Hill and the trail stays below 3000m until the last day to
Muktinath (3800m). There is only one route through the Thak Khola,
so unless you carry on up over the Thorang La pass or fly back from
Jomsom, you have to back track. Or you can walk as far as you like
and walk back. The Muktinath temple, Tatopani (hot baths), Marpha
town, Kagbeni and Tukche are the attractions of this trek. You could
also fly to Jomsom visit Muktinath and trek all the way down towards
Beni (near Pokhara) or the other way round of trekking up and flying
back to Pokhara from Jomsom.
Itinerary-
Day 1 arrive at Kathmandu,

and afternoon free in Kathmandu.
Day 3 fly to Pokhara

The
Poon Hill Trek: If you haven’t time to do the full Jomsom trek,
you can get a taste of it by visiting Poon Hill. The route ambles
through steep, lush hill country, taking in some lovely Gurung villages
and rewarding you with outstanding views of the Annapurnas and Machhapuchre.
The trails are wide and well maintained, though steep in places.
The highest point reached is 3200m, which shouldn’t present any
altitude problems, but warm clothes and rain gear is advisable.
Watching the mountains at sunrise from here is probably the single
most done thing in the trekking universe. You can also visit Ghandruk,
headquarters of the ACAP, on the way back.

| The
Annapurna Sanctuary: The aptly named trek is the most intensely
scenic short trek in Nepal. From Gandruk on the Jomsom route, the
trail bends singlemindedly north into the very heart of the Annapurna
range: following the short, steep Modi Khola, it soon leaves all
permanent settlements behind, climbs through dense bamboo jungle
and finally, rising above makes for a narrow notch between the lower
flanks of Machhapuchre and Hiunchuli. Once you pass this you have
passed the gate of the Sanctuary and wherever you stand, the 360-degree
views are unspeakably beautiful.
Itinerary: Day 01arrive Kathmandu,

The
Annapurna Circuit: This is a challenging but rewarding three week
trek with excellent views. Starting in sub tropical paddy at 500m,
the trail ascends steadily to the 5415 meter Thorung La Pass before
returning along the previously described Jomsom route. The circuit
follows the Marshyandi valley north and then west all the way to
the pass. The route braces you with terraced farmland, temperate
forest, coniferous forest, alpine meadows and finally the arid steppes
of the rain shadow.

UPPER
MUSTANG
It is an ancient Himalayas kingdom. Inside a picturesque city of
Lo Manthang are some of the largest Tibetan & Buddhist Gompas
in Nepal. At present Mustang is a very popular trekking region in
Nepal. The Home Ministry of Nepal announced the opening of the restricted
areas in October 1991. There is also strict control in obtaining
a special permit from the Department of Immigration to protect their
tradition from outside influence as well as to protect their environment.
According to government rule, liaison officers should always accompany
the trekking groups. The high desert region of the Tibetan influence
from the Tibetan border south to Kagbeni is generally referred to
as “Upper Mustang" that has its own nominal king. The Mustang
is one of the very few places on earth, which is not spoilt by trekkers.
Being under the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the area receives
scanty rainfall making the region dry and arid-very similar to the
adjoining Tibetan plateau. The trek to Lo-Manthang is through an
almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down
hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several
other peaks make your trek memorable.

Jumla
& Rara
Jumla,
is on the banks of the Tila Khola at 2370m, is one of the highest
rice growing areas in the world. Rara lake(2980m) is the focal point
of the Rara National Park and is good destination for a trek. These
lie in the remote Karnali region, northwest of Kathmandu. The region
is made-up of long ridges covered with temperate forests and alpine
pastures enclosing high valleys. Summer rainfall is low, but winter
snow can be heavy and persistent. Since the region is fairly high
and free from monsoon thunderstorms, the summer season is ideal
for trekking. Winters are cold, but the autumn season trekking is
rewarded with a profusion of alpine flowers.
Dolpa
Dolpa is located inside the Shey – Phoksundo National Park of mid–western
Nepal, behind the Dhaulagiri massif, towards the Tibetan Plateau.
Cut off by a series of very high passes, closed by snow most of
the year; Dolpa remains a truly isolated corner of Nepal. Time has
stood still here for centuries as the inhabitants of Tibetan stock
continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have done since
time immemorial. The finally preserved Eco–system encompasses a
wild and wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including the
blue sheep and leopard. A trek through Dolpa is an experience not
easily forgotten. Dolpa is the most remote and least developed district
in Nepal. Although a few anthropologists and geographers had explored
the region, the entire district was closed to trekkers until 1989
when the southern part of Dolpa was opened to organized trekking
groups; Shey is still closed to foreigners. One story cites the
reason for closure as the large-scale theft of statues from monasteries
several years ago. It is possible to visit Tibetan-style “inner
Dolpa” villages Tarap and at Phoksundo Lake, but most of the southern
part of Dolpa is a region of Hindu influence.
